The Garvan Institute of Medical Research is one of Australia's premier biomedical research institutes. Garvan's state-of-the-art research facilities are situated on the campus of St Vincent's Hospital, a major teaching hospital of the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. The St Vincent's Hospital campus is a major medical research precinct in Sydney consisting of the Garvan Institute, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and the St Vincent's Centre for Applied Medical Research.
The Cancer, Diabetes & Obesity, Immunology & Inflammation, Neuroscience and Osteoporosis & Bone Biology Programs at Garvan comprise >500 scientists with scientific and clinical expertise across a number of research disciplines, ranging from molecular genetics, genomics and epigenomics through various aspects of molecular and cell biology, biochemistry and physiology to clinical and translational research. Garvan's mission is to develop research programs that combine high quality basic research with strong clinical interactions to make a major impact on human health through translation into better outcomes for patients.
The Cancer Research Program currently has an opening for a research Group Leader who will use contemporary genomic and molecular tools to provide deeper insights into the molecular basis of prostate cancer and develop new diagnostic, prognostic and predictive biomarkers for this disease. The Program provides a vibrant, multidisciplinary and interactive research environment, with major research interests in apoptosis, biomarker development, cancer genetics/genomics, cell cycle, developmental biology, epigenetics/epigenomics, invasion & metastasis, signal transduction, steroid hormone action and therapeutic development. These basic science disciplines are integrated into organspecific translational research programs including prostate cancer. This rich and diverse research environment will be further enhanced by the recently-funded Kinghorn Cancer Centre (http://www.garvan.org.au/about-us/TKCC), scheduled for completion in 2012.
The appointment will be made at the level of Research Fellow or above, commensurate with the successful applicant's achievements and vision. Remuneration will be at current University/NHMRC scales and is negotiable at the senior levels.
